2008 National Finals - Winners and Runners Up

The 2008 National Finals were concluded at Blackford BC on Sunday 17th August 2008 following their abandonment on Saturday 9th August.

 SINGLES

The weather was perfect for playing off the remaining ends of the three Finals and it was the Singles competition which was completed first.

GREG BALDRY (East Calder BC), representing West Lothian, held a commanding 11 - 2 lead over ROSS MARTIN (Dunfermline West End BC), the West Fife qualifier.

6 of the 11 ends had been played when the game had to be stopped due to torrential rain in Grangemouth.

The Final score was 15 - 4 resulting in Greg becoming the National Singles Champion for 2008.

   WINNER - Greg Baldry
(East Calder BC) -  WEST LOTHIAN

   RUNNER UP - Ross Martin
(Dunfermline West End BC) -  WEST FIFE

 TRIPLES

The Triples was the next game completed, having resumed on the third of the 7 ends with EAST LOTHIAN leading HIGHLAND 3 - 1.

The final score was 6 - 4 to the East Lothian triple, which survived a scare in the last end with the East Lothian skip burning the end with his last bowl with the Highland boys lying game.

East Lothian managed to hold on in the replayed last end to become the National Triples Champions for 2008.

WINNERS -  Dale Muir, Andrew Ferguson and Daniel Peart
                   (Longniddry BC) - EAST LOTHIAN

RUNNERS UP - Eoin Thomson, Willie McIntosh and Sean Paterson                         (Keith BC) - HIGHLAND

PAIRS

The Pairs was the last game on the green to finish.

HIGHLAND held a 2 - 0 lead against LANARKSHIRE after the first two ends of the abandoned game at Grangemouth, leaving a further 7 ends to be played on the Blackford green.

The Highland pair managed to increase their lead to 6 - 0 and kept the scoring down to single shots as the Lanarkshire team produced a comeback.

The Highland lads went into the last end with a 4 shot cushion and were lying 3 shots right on top of the jack after the leads had played their 4 bowls.

The Lanarkshire skip managed to burn the end but on the replayed end Highland were able to keep the score against them down to one shot giving them a winning score of 8 - 5.

WINNERS - Gary Stevens and Scott Stephen
                      (Macduff BC) - HIGHLAND

RUNNERS UP - Claire Walker and Thomas Kerr
                           (Burnbank BC) - LANARKSHIRE

2008 National Finals  (Abandoned on 9th August)
The 2008 National Finals had to be abandoned on Saturday 9th August due to heavy rain at Zeneca Bowling Club in Grangemouth.

The Round Robin Stages to find the 4 semi finalists in each of the disciplines (Singles, Pairs and Triples) had been concluded, although rain earlier in the day had meant the round robins at Talbot Street, Grangemouth had to be halted for a short period.

The Semi Finals were successfully completed in dry conditions although the weather was looking ominous.

The qualifiers for the Finals were:

SINGLES:
Greg Baldry (East Calder BC) -  West Lothian
                                     -v-
Ross Martin (Dunfermline West End BC) -  West Fife

PAIRS:
Claire Walker and Thomas Kerr (Burnbank BC) - Lanarkshire
                                      -v-
Gary Stevens and Scott Stephen (Macduff BC) - Highland

TRIPLES:
Eoin Thomson, Willie McIntosh and Sean Paterson
                                                          (Keith BC) - Highland
                                      -v-
Dale Muir, Andrew Ferguson and Daniel Peart
                                                  (Longniddry BC) - East Lothian

The Finals had to be stopped by the official umpire after 6 of the 11 scheduled ends in the Singles and after 2 ends in both the Pairs (9 ends) and Triples (7 ends) as torrential rain began to flood the playing surface.

As there was no sign of the rain stopping and the green becoming playable again, the Executive Committee held a meeting and then held further meetings with the Convenors of the Districts with representatives in the finals.

It was agreed that the Finals would be concluded at Blackford BC on Sunday 17th August 2008 starting at 11a.m. (Players to report for 10.45a.m.)

Blackford BC is hosting the play down for the North Section, in the Inter Counties Competition, on that date and was scheduled to start at 11a.m.

Highland are to be in attendance at the North Section play down and as they have significantly more distance to travel compared to the other finalists it was unanimously agreed that it made sense to play off the National Finals at Blackford BC prior to the Inter Counties "North" Section play down.

The Inter Counties play down for the "North" Section will therefore commence at 12 noon, after the conclusion of the National Finals.

It has been further agreed by the Executive Committee that all three finals will be played off at Blackford BC starting from the replay of the abandoned end and the current scores (as shown on the cards held by President Ross Dennis will stand).

The Finals will NOT therefore be started afresh as new games.
