2009 National Team News
SYBA v NORTH ENGLAND JUNIOR SELECT
Scotland Under 17’s (SYBA) v Northern England Juniorsat Gosforth BC,
Northumberland – Sunday 13th Sept 2009.
“O Flower of
Scotland, when will we see your likes again,That fought
and played for, your wee bit hill and glen,You stood
against them , Chris Palmers army. And sent them
homeward to think again.”

Match Report:
The SYBA team travelled to Gosforth BC,
Northumberland to play the first international game at youth level. Our SYBA team kept up their
proud tradition by totally outplaying the England team, with 5 out
of 6 rinks having comprehensive wins and our 6th rink
just needing to keep the score down to record a magnificent victory
of 159 shots to 104 shots.
The home club – Gosforth BC, and
the home association – Northumberland were excellent hosts and the
SYBA would like to thank them for their hospitality.
We would like to thank, Chris
Palmer for all his hard work in making the event possible and for
organising the Northern Counties team.
The home association named
Christopher Stein as the Scotland ‘Man of the Match’.
Christopher was also the
Scottish Captain for the day.
However we would need to name 25
‘Persons of the Match’ because every member of the team played their
part.
Also we would need to pass on a
big thanks to the large travelling support that attended and made a
very vocal addition to the day.
The match against England was
the culmination of 5 years of hard work for the SYBA selectors,
David Ferguson, Neil McMonagle, Gordon Wotherspoon and the late
Peter Keogh. We would hope we can take this forward and arrange an
annual event and perhaps encourage other Home Nations to organise at
youth level to try to emulate the high standard we have set this
weekend.
Neil McMonagleSYBA Vice
President.

2008 National Team News
2008 NATIONAL TEAM SQUAD
(AT MACDUFF BC ON 20TH SEPTEMBER 2008)
Highland District Select
v SYBA U16 National Team (at Macduff BC, on Saturday 20th
September 2008)
A very strong Highland select team played against the
young bowlers at Macduff BC on Saturday 20th September
2008.
The playing conditions were perfect, as the summer
eventually arrived, albeit 4 months late.
Alan Mitchell had obviously spent most of the last few
weeks’ talent spotting in the Highland region.
This was probably the best opposition the SYBA team
have ever played against.
Alan had provided player profiles for the Highland
squad which highlighted the strength of the squad with a rink of
British Isles Winners in 2005, 5 junior internationalists, 6 county players
with the remainder of the Highland team made up of former and current HYBA players.
The game itself was a pleasure to watch with 5 of the 6 games very close.
As the end of the game arrived the master scoreboard
was swinging from one side to the other.
Both of the teams looked as though they were going to
win, a late run of shots saw the SYBA finishing strongly with
victories across 3 rinks.
The British Isles winners’ rink managed to stay
slightly ahead of Michael Docherty’s rink narrowly winning by 5 shots.
With two games still playing the master scoreboard was
still showing a narrow margin in favour of the Highland team.
As the 5th rink finished the game was still
in the balance.
The result of the contest was going to depend on how
the last end of the last game was going to finish with the Highland
team leading by 3 shots (107 – 104).
Christopher Carswell’s rink had trailed all through
their game, but it could still win the match in favour of the SYBA.
4 shots on the final end would give the SYBA a victory,
whilst 3 would mean a tie overall.
With both skips left to play the SYBA rink lay 3 shots
with the jack having been trailed to the ditch.
Christopher was first to
play and managed to draw a
fourth (and potentially game winning) shot.
Current Junior International skip, Kevin Beaton (Highland
Captain for the match) managed to draw the second shot with
his first bowl and this could not removed from the head by the SYBA
skip’s second bowl.
The SYBA rink retained their one shot with Kevin
playing his last bowl short in the knowledge that his second shot had
won the game for his Highland team.
The final result was: Highland Select - 107
SYBA - 105
Big thanks go to Alan Mitchell for organising such a
strong team to play against our young Scotland team.
Thanks also to Zander Mair and the Committee of Macduff
BC for the use of their great facilities and to all the players and
supporters who travelled to Macduff to make this game a success.
Further thanks to go David Ferguson for organising the
Scotland team.
SYBA captain for the day was Kevin Donnachie,
who has played in every game since the start of the
national team, a remarkable record.

National Team Selector)

______________________________________________________________SYBA v SYIBA Report -Northfield - Saturday
13th September
The dismal weather conditions did not stop our young bowlers from both
formats dishing up one of brightest and closest fought games the squad
have ever been involved in. The game swung back and forth with the
lead changing hands on many occasions. The shot total was close all
the way through the game, although after a particularly heavy rain
shower the SYIBA opened up a 10 shot lead. The young SYBA team fought
back once again, and at the conclusion of the 19th end of 21 end
contest across the six rinks, the SYBA team led by 5 shots. A late
fight back from the SYIBA teams saw the last end of the last game
being played with the SYBA needing 3 shots to gain a victory.
Unfortunately they could only take a single shot, therefore the SYIBA
team were victorious by the margin of 1.75 shots.
Final Result : SYBA - 103 shots v SYIBA - 104.75
shots
Congratulations to the SYIBA team, and we are already looking forward
to our rematch indoors on the 26th October.
A big thanks to Gordon Woods and Lindsay Crombie for organising a very
strong SYIBA squad, for all the organisations involved at the
Northfield complex and not forgetting David Ferguson and Neil
McMonagle for organising the SYBA squad.
Finally I would like to thank all the young bowlers who took part,
especially Emma McNaughton who volunteered to play for the SYIBA team
because they were 2 players short. The performance from both squads
proved once again that the future of bowls in Scotland is safe for
many years to come.SYBA team was:-

National Team Trial - 20th July 2008A
big thanks to the 29 players who managed up to the Grangemouth Railway
BC on Sunday 20th July for a squad get together and trial match.
The standard of bowling was excellent and it looks like we are in good
shape for this season's fixtures.
The players who are still eligible from last season, are anyone who
was in last year's squad and were still under 16 years of age on the
1st April 2008.
The players who took part in the trial will be informed of their
inclusion in the squad through their district convenors.
I will also post the squad names on the website after the National
Finals on the 9th August 2008.
Fixture list to be posted as soon as possible.
Thanks for your patience & understanding.

SYBA Vs SYIBA - Match Report (2ND SEPTEMBER 2007)
Following on from their successful game against
the SYBA officials at Denny BC on the 29th July, the SYBA
team were up for the game against their hardest opponents to date –
the SYIBA team.
The SYIBA are the only team to have beaten the
youngsters, but they have only managed that on the indoor surface.
The sun was shining and the game swung back and
forth until near the end when the SYBA team edged it by 144 shots to
113 shots.
Much of the credit goes to Alan Barrie’s rink for
a big score of 40 to 8 and to the rinks of Lisa Barrett and Martin
Leghorn , who both came back from big losses early in the game to
narrow defeats at the end.
Thanks to Gordon Woods & Lindsay Crombie for
organising the SYIBA teams and the members and Directors of
Shettleston BC for the use of their greens and facilities.
The next organised game is on Sunday 23rd
September 2007 at Dunblane BC against a Stirling County U25 select.

2005 National Team News
: SYBA SELECT V SYIBA SELECT RESULT
"The Ba's burst"
Our proud record came to a dramatic halt at Falkirk IBC, but we had to
be beat by ourselves!
The SYIBA team managed to defeat the SYBA team by 129 shots to 89.
The match was played in very good spirit with both teams performing
well. The indoor team had more experience on the surface and settled
better.
Although we were defeated, the match was very worthwhile as it gave us
an opportunity to get the team together and bring back some overage
players to meet up with their old team mates.
I am using the excuse that the indoor team borrowed most of our best
players, so we only got beat by ourselves.
I am looking forward to meeting up with most of the team again next
season, along with all the new members of the squad after we have the
trials at the start of next season.
I would like to thank Gordon Woods, Lindsay Crombie & David Ferguson
for
the opportunity to play indoors and wish them all the best with their
season and hope that they can get the Welsh Youth Bowling Association
to
agree to a match outdoors next season.
A return match will be held next year on grass where we will get our
revenge.

"Clean sweep for the young guns!"
The SYBA under 16 team kept up their remarkable record and managed to
complete their season undefeated.
Their latest victory was 111 shots to 98 against a Lothian Under 21

rally from the Lothian team.
At the end of the match David Ferguson thanked all the SYBA players
who took part during the season and wished all the overage players
who are ineligible for next season all the best for the future.
Due to the large number of players who are now too old to represent
the Under 16 team, we will be holding trials at the beginning of next
season to recruit a full squad for the future.
A big thanks to Linlithgow BC for all their assistance with the
facilities and catering and Lindsay Crombie for organising the
Lothian select team.

players available and getting them to the fixtures on time.
